"Frauen in politischen Funktionen" (Women in political Office) is a new rubric on the Homepage of Bürgerforum. Here you find a summary of the presentation of Dr Melanie Sully on the statistics of female representation in Austria in the state parliaments, governments, city councils and mayors (currently just 5.6%), federal government and European comparisons as well as analysis, challenges and best practices. The presentation was commissioned by the OSCE/ODIHR and Dr Nathalie Tagwerker for the Organisation gave a presentation on female representation in the 57 participating states and presented the Six Step Action Plan to promote women in elected office. Gudrun Mosler-Törnström said she had been lucky in spending 12 years in Sweden and so on returning to Austria local and regional politics, a predominantly male preserve, she felt equipped to ride the difficulties but mentioned it had been hard. She talked of the political culture in rural areas but pointed out that it was not always easy to find willing and suitable female candidates to stand for positions such as mayor. The job is very time consuming and there are huge responsibilities but training schemes to help with this exist run by the Austrian Association of Municipalities to encourage women to take on this task.
